The mediActions symposium will bring together the resident artists with experts from many fields in a concentrated debate upon the relations of media technology with notions of public space, civil society and political and social change.

This will provide a forum to examine the various approaches to media technology across the Asian region, drawing together the various threads of investigation being pursued as part of the mediActions program, the symposium will join the visiting artists with curators, artists, theorists and activists based in Japan in a vigorous srutinization of the interplay between media technology and social action.

Questioning the state of the technological society of Japan, China, India and Indonesia and comparing their cultural, political, economic and historical conditions the symposium will query, in relation to each region, how is technology received? how is it utilized? how are its creative potentials realized?

The panel will go on to highlight the possibilities or impossibilities of activation, empowerment and social change through media technology while also touching upon its relation to notions and manifestations of gender. The participants will debate the potential of media technology to raise social awareness and mobilize populations, examining specific examples from both art and social contexts.
