Akihabara

Dislocate will this year hold its main events in the infamous area of Akihabara. Long established as the electronics mecca of Japan, this unique neighbourhood of Tokyo is lined with electronics stores of all shapes and sizes, from the large multi-storey chain stores to the tiny individual stalls crammed into railway under passes and narrow back streets. In parallel to this electronics world, there also exists the world of manga and anime (often of extreme taste) with many stores devoted to such materials and paraphernalia, and now spawning a cos-play phenomenon of “maid cafes”. Akihabara is distinct as a centre of many sub-cultures, a place of playfulness and experimentation. This is the locality that Dislocate’s mediActions aims to root itself in, both in union and subversion.

3331 Arts Chiyoda will be the main host of this 6 week series of events. 3331 represents a highly unique locality in itself. 3331 Arts Chiyoda offers a new model for a creative hub which builds a unique platform for cross-disciplinary, cross-community and cross-regional exchange. Based on the site of a former junior high school, this renovated 4 storey building, with its original character, plays host to an exciting range of events, exhibitions, community facilities, creative organizations and artistic practitioners. 3331 creates a space in which people of many different backgrounds and experiences can come together to explore, learn and create.
