discussion
The discussion series is an opportunity for artists and audiences to come together with other special guests in a relaxed setting to share ideas and opinions. Participants will be able to introduce their activities and experiences while also expressing their insights into specific topics which mediActions attempts to deal with.
There will be three main discussion events covering the following issues:
MEDIA ACTIVISM//ALTERNATIVE MEDIA
How do we gain information about the world around us? Do we simply rely on sources of mass media? How do we assess the value, accuracy and partiality of the information we access? With the rise of the internet and accessible media technology every citizen has the potential to be a journalist, anyone has the ability to publish information, forming a new democracy and thirst for participation. However, do blogs of monologues and facebook fiends do not equate to a new political consciousness? This discussion will examine the utilization of media technology towards meaningful social engagement and transformation.
ASIAN MEDIA ART
Japan, along with South Korea, is often seen as the forefront of technology and creative media innovation by its other Asian neighbours and has an established history of combining art and technology. However other Asian countries such as China and India are now surpassing Japan in technological output and are currently nurturing a highly unique approach to the creative possibilities of such technologies. This discussion will include introductions by all three resident artists upon the development and current state of media arts in their own cities/countries and will also contributions from Japanese creative practitioners who have engaged in particular research with regard media art in the Asian region.
GENDER
How has media technology impacted upon our notions and expressions of gender? Does it offer the opportunity to overcome gender stereotypes or does it continue to reinforce them? Are we provided with virtual liberation at the cost of physical liberation?
