workshop

Central to the "mediations of locality" program will be a series of workshops to be held each week, in a collaborative process working with local groups exploring the use and relevance of new media strategies in the local environment and linking communities from the other participating cities in a sharing of their diverse contexts.

Preeyachanok Ketsuwan

Childhood Space - Ketsuwan has been engaged with vulnerable children in Bangkok through various creative projects, working with those suffering with HIV, the disabled, orphaned and children living in poverty. Ketsuwan will link disadvantaged children in Tokyo and Bangkok in this workshop and encourage children to share insights into their way of everyday life , the hardships they face, but also the things which make them happy, expressing their dreams and aspirations too. In this workshop which incorporates elements of art therapy, the ability of children in distant cities to share their experiences and offer support to each other will be explored. Through the use of  photo, video and drawings they will express 'my place', their favourite place, the place where they feel comfortable, to each other . Children who may be socially excluded still have a place.

Duc Tu Nguyen

The Spirit of Place - Nguyen aims to investigate the spiritual and psychological attachment we have to place, hoping to collaborate with foreign residents in Tokyo, and those of varied cultural background. Those who have moved to Japan from another country, or have cultural ties to elsewhere, may have a strong relationship to a distant place, but at the same time they are developing ties to their current environment. It is this process which Nguyen wishes to explore. Through the use of art and media technology how may the hidden layers of place be revealed? We each have an emotional attachment to place, and we each carry place with us, so how do we begin to form our sense of belonging? In this workshop the artist will question the spirit of media technology and how it may used to express emotional states.

Andreas Siagian

Environment and Ecology - Over the past year Siagian has been rigorously engaged in environmental issues and expressing these through the creative use of media technologies. One such project measures the CO2 levels in the atmosphere and transforms these into sounds. In his series of workshops Siagian intends to work with local residents interested in the environment and ecology and begin a process of visualizing and sonifying environmental data through the use of moving image, sound, etc. Through this activity the artist hopes to promote discussion on global warming, pollution, recycling and ecology awareness.

Lim Kok Yoong

Data Presence - Lim has pursued a rigorous interest in time and mortality in his work and will be offering workshops in the investigation of these themes in relation to digital media. In his series of workshops Lim will be merging the art of palm reading with that of map making. Participants will map their 'life line' onto the local area and physically walking along this line will record the environmental sounds around them, creating a multi-layered representation of one's body and its connection to a specific place.
