Shishido Yumi (commandN), Niwa Yoshinori, Taniguchi Akihiko, Ma Jung Yeon, Nakajima Ko, Mohri Yuko, Andreas Siagian, Lim Kok Yoong, Nguyen Du Tu, Preeyachanok Ketsuwan

The accompanying symposium will provide a significant forum for in depth discussion and debate in the examination of new media practices in South East Asia and Japan, investigating their specific social/cultural/political contexts and inter-related histories. The participating artists in residence will provide an overview of media art developments in their own cities/countries affording an insight into the various practices of other artists active in the field and providing summaries of the facilities and support available for such engagements. Guest speakers including art directors, curators, researchers and artists based in Japan with experience of the media arts field and exchange with South East Asia will contribute to the symposium by relating their  expert knowledge.

In this platform for critical discussion we will attempt to tackle the following questions:

l  How does the media arts provision in S.E Asian cities/countries compare to that inTokyo/Japan? What differences in approach lie here? What can be learnt from these contexts?

l  How are social, cultural, political conditions expressed in the development of media arts in these various localities?

l  How do we define notions such as locality and community?

l  What role does new media play in transforming these notions?

l  How do we interact and engage with new and distant spaces?

l  How do we tangibly grasp the different contexts of these spaces?

l  What is the result that the Enframing of new media has on perception and reception of place?

l  How can we use media systems to re-experience our surroundings and effectively communicate this to elsewhere?

l  In our localities we are faced with issues of education, health, the environment and social challenges how can we explore these and raise awareness of them through new media?

l  How can we empower groups and individuals in an increasingly control society? When our environment is pervaded by technology how can we change our passive reception to one of active creativity in which we generate content or challenge the preprogrammed utilization of such media?
