 'Sonorous Spaces'.

http://www.sonorous-spaces.com

The installation is a "roaming" installation, functional in any location, both in physical and virtual space.  By using sound, Sonorous Spaces explore the notion of archetypes and the role these 'patterns of experience' play in the formation of culture (learnt behaviour), whilst simultaneously bringing awareness to the impact of sound on an individuals internal and external experience.

The Sonorous Spaces are thresholds, that once crossed affect the listeners f subjectivity both willingly and subconsciously.  Within these spaces, authenticity resides within each participant and that sense of authenticity remains in a continual state of flux and evolution.  The meeting between subject and object gives rise to new representations and significance, with interaction and interpretation creating new modes of thought and destroying old notions and concepts.

The installation takes the form of a website.  This website has two pages or spaces, each with a different sound and a word definition.  The user is  asked to input a description or impression of the sound into Now what happens behind the scenes is that every word entered is logged and every repetition of a word is counted.  The word that has the most counts has it's definition displayed on screen.  The program scans online dictionaries for a definition of that word.

The installation represents the formation of culture from original archetypal beginnings and explores the idea of learnt behaviour (culture) having origins in pre existing patterns of experience (archetypes).

The sounds used have been specially collected due to their potential semiotic significance and thus their archetypal relevance.  Although not immediately apparent, there will be a sense of familiarity about some of the sounds. The two spaces use very different sources, but could potentially have very similar assumptions made about them.

Elsewhere on the website is a "Cultural Evolution" page.  On this page the participant will be able to view the cultural evolution of the spaces.
