Drawing Together is primarily a work about how the body has been fragmented by the development of high-speed transport and communication between distant spaces on the globe. Travelling within a city often entails a certain level of dissociation from one’s physical experience, the journey from A to B can often become automatic, the traveller having little conscious experience of the traversed space. Inspired by the format of Japanese 15th century scrolls, Drawing Together is an attempt to create urban landscape drawings that reflect the separation between the physical and mental experiences of place in the contemporary world. Visitors to the Dislocate Festival in Tokyo are invited to take on the role of the mind, abstractly providing the intention and direction of travel. The artist in London then takes on the role of engaging with the physical aspects of the proposed journey, the use of the body, location, terrain and weather. The body and mind are thus separated geographically creating a fragmented global body that produces a drawing.
「Drawing
「Drawing
